THE HISTORY
Maxi Pioneers and the 1991 precedent
34 years ago, the first International Maxi Games Argentina 91 took place. It was quite a challenge. Fifty-nine countries participated in 19 disciplines, with athletes from 25 to over 70 years old. A total of 10,000 athletes (5,000 foreigners) participated. They were sponsored by the National Government and the OAS.

That event took place in Buenos Aires with the Summer Games and in Bariloche's Cerro Catedral with the Winter Games. They competed from August 22 in 19 disciplines. They ended on September 12 in Patagonia Argentina. The following took part: Basketball, Canoeing, Cycling, Fencing, Skiing, Soccer, Golf, Handball, Lawn Hockey, Swimming, Rowing, Rugby, Squash, Tennis, Paddle Tennis, Table Tennis, Shooting, Volleyball and Yachting.
There were representatives from Antigua, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Belgium, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Bermuda Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czechoslovakia, China, Chile, Denmark, Ecuador, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Holland, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Scotland, Spain, United States, England, Ireland, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxemburg, Mali, Mexico, Namibia, New Zealand, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Soviet Union, Uruguay, Venezuela and Yugoslavia.
In a statement at the time, it was mentioned that “we proudly convened and were answered by all continents”.
The organization launched a powerful message: “When sport brings people together, social, political, cultural, economic and religious differences are excluded”.
The message for these Maxi Games is clear: “Sport is for life”.
CONTINUITY IN PRACTICE
Rubén Rodríguez Lamas was president of that Organizing Committee. He is currently the Honorary President of the 2026 Games.
On May 29, 1991, in a note published in the newspaper La Prensa, he said: “The objective of these events is to give continuity in sport to people, athletes or not, who due to their age cannot participate in high competition.
More distant in time, the country was a pioneer of the Maxi competitions, since they date back to the 70s.
Rodriguez Lamas, as a final message, said: “The opportunity is unique, you only need passion for the sport and the desire to excel”.
At that time, in another article (Crónica newspaper) Rodríguez Lamas said: “You have to give life to the years, instead of years to life”.
